Every Valley

Advent Reflection

I can’t read Isaiah 40 without hearing the piece from Handel’s Messiah. “Every valley… shall be exalted… shall BEEEE… exaa-aaa-aaa-aaa-aaa-aalted… and every mountain and hill laid loooow.”

The prophet is talking about removing every obstacle to seeing God at work in the world. “And the glory, the glory of the LOOORD shall be-ee-ee reveal-éd.”

I wonder if that’s the key: all of us making God’s goodness known. “Go up on a high mountain…raise your voice and shout” (v. 9), “Speak compassionately” (v. 2).

“And all flesh shall see it together (and all flesh shall see it together).” I wonder if that is the glory of God: all of us seeing it together.
